One product for one factor. Explain how/why (e.g. beer sales impacted by politics because Islamic-oriented government seeks to ban it, etc.).
One product for one factor. Explain how/why (e.g. beer sales impacted by politics because Islamic-oriented government seeks to ban it, etc.).
demographics - Brain dead films because of the Y generation boom - recent world poll show the spending power for moviegoers are mainly in the age of 16-29. Recent census indicate that this demographic is one of the largest, thus more explosive, extremely brain dead (zombies could enjoy it) movies like Aliens Vs Predator, Aliens Vs Predator 2, Alien vs Predator 3 (coming soon, sadly) has a strong following. regardless how dumb they are
ReplyDeletepolitics - Hybrid cars because of Democratic power. The recent shift in world politics to the democratic side (Australia, America, even Malaysia) has shown a sharp upturn in the sale of hybrid cars, as the democrat leaders of the world tend to support more green-saving products.
culture - Post material - The recent boom in Myspace, Facebook and other social networking sites have dealt a death blow to the sales of post material such as stamps and envelopes. the ability to convey message to your friend in Zimbabwe in 3 seconds means that the pen pal business is dead, and the post is now just for official business
technology - Non-work related books - as e-books become more popular and more accessible (not to mention more easily downloaded illegally), fiction books (LOTR, HP, Twilight series) are starting to come out less in paper. The shift is not as significant now, but will be seen in a short few years when the electronic newspaper comes out and can be used as an e book reader (see http://www.yankodesign.com/images/design_news/2007/02/16/electronic_newspaper.jpg)
nature - gas mask - H1N1 and the haze has led to an increase in the demand of gas mask, which sellers recently took advantage of by selling them at a higher price
economics - oil - the recent problems associated with the economic downturn has left to a sharp decrease on the demand of oil.

ReplyDeleteDemographics – Television. Television doesn’t attempt to appeal to a mass audience anymore, it is seeking what is called “demographic clusters”. The industry understands that they can’t market to everyone, thus they create particular kinds of products to appeal specific groups. The advent of more and more channels reflect this ethos, meaning that the more channels there are, the more fragmented the audience is. Men generally watch Comedy Central and ESPN while women watch Lifetime and Family Channel. Then there’s the matter of the TV shows shown on these channels, Seinfeld was the most watched show among the whites but only ranked 54th among the blacks. The amount of niche audience-specific shows proliferated along with the number of channels, ergo complicating audience segmentation even more. The rise of more cable and satellite TV that feature more channels can be contributed to the increasing segmentation of audiences.
Politics – Plan for National Healthcare in the United States (this is a service, and a service is considered a product too, right?) because of the Obama administration. This was Obama’s primary promise when he campaigned and now it is transitioning into reality despite backwater rednecks protesting and making baseless comparisons between Obama and Hitler because of his healthcare plan (???). On a tangential note, check out this amusing link; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYlZiWK2Iy8
Culture – The majority of global fast food franchises. Fast food restaurants would attempt to adapt to/exploit the cultural context they are in. This can be seen in seasonal food such as McDonalds’ Prosperity Burger or KFC’s curry chicken. There are also promotions that are dependent on cultural or religious festivities; Subway is having a Buka Puasa promotion for example. Cultural adaptation also goes as far as to change the look of certain fast food franchises, in Thailand McDonalds had figurines of their mascot Ronald McDonald doing the traditional Thai greeting of a slight bow, with the palms pressed together in a prayer-like fashion.
Technology – Communication media. Convergence is the key word of future media technology, media specialists Thomas and Carpenter predicted that 2001 will see the merger of telephone, cable television, fax, video and image services. And that is exactly what has happened over the past decade with the emergence of iPhone, X-Box Live service, and any modern day computers to name a few. They have all become amalgams of different communication devices.
Nature – Plastic bags due to environmental concern. Because the degradation process of plastic can take up anywhere from hundreds to thousands of years, its usage has decreased over time and paper bags have become the more practical solution at most supermarkets, grocery stores and what not.
Economics – Hummer cars due to a still relatively big class divide. Luxury cars are wont to have less demand in Malaysia as the purchasing power of the majority of Malaysians simply can’t afford something that costs close to a million ringgit.
- Man Yin -
ReplyDeleteDemographics - More homeguards service at Petaling Jaya residential area. This is because the increase of robbery and snatch thieve cases recently.
Politics - Foreign cars. To protect local car production for example: Proton and Perodoa, the taxes for foreign cars is really high which end up locals are unaffordable to purchase but support local production.
Culture - Fitness First. This is the trend where everyone starts to do exercise indoor rather than public park outside their house. This is affected by the secondary value of culture, as everyone just following the hit which will soon be changed too.
Technology - TM IDD card. Nowadays, it is less of phone usage for international connection since the creation of Skype and MSN are free, fast and clear. So why choose the unclear phone call which cost ?
Nature - Mask. The global concern now: H1N1 had raise the need of mask ! Everyone buy mask for their love one and also themselve.
Economics - Ogawa product. During economic downturn period, consumer is satisfied with their three main meals, there is no higher expectation on their health by consuming any Ogawa product.
Demographics: Healthcare. In countries with low birth and mortality rates, it can be seen that the level of healthcare in the particular country is relatively high and modern with sufficient medication and equipment which are of the latest technology.
ReplyDeletePolitics: Masks. The government implemented price ceilings for these items so that citizens would not have to suffer.
Culture: Charity/Old-folks homes/NGOs. Companies which have the sense of social responsibility contribute(money, time, energy)to these homes/help the unfortunate/lend a helping hand.
Technology: LCD panels. Consumers now want the products they use to be sleek/elegant-looking/etc. Shops which sell electronic products have a wide range of LCD televisions. Consumers hardly go for the CRT ones anymore.
Nature: The airline industry. The society in general is travelling less due to the spread of the H1N1. The airline industries have to increase their promotions to encourage travel and not incur losses.
Economics: Restaurants. Due to the current state of the economy(recession), people are cutting back on unnecessary expenditure and choose to have their meals at home to save money.
Economic: The increased price of crude oil, a commodity upon which the economies of advanced western nations were principally dependant. This contributed significantly to a world economic recession. Therefore, increased oil prices meant increased energy cost (hence increased transportation, power and heating and lighting costs), as well as increases in the cost of many oil-based raw materials such as plastics. This oil crisis demonstrates clearly how dramatic economic change can upset the traditional structures and balances in the world business environment.
ReplyDeleteDemographic: A home-building contractor should begin to pay closer attention to the needs of people over 65 (20 percent of the Malaysia population will be over 65 by the year 2010) as baby boomers begin to edge closer to retirement. People are living longer and spending more on vacations, recreation, and entertainment.
Technological: Innovation can create or wipe out industries and businesses in less than a year. One example is the popularity and convenience of CD players all but eliminated the sale of record players and seriously depressed the manufacture and sale of vinyl records. This is especially important for you if your product is technology based.
Social and cultural: There is a sweeping trend for the world to dress more casually, with function and comfort driving new clothing and shoe trends. People are cooking less and are more concerned about nutrition and fat in their diets. And today, people are less willing to sacrifice family life for business careers.

nature-masks, they have increased in sales due to the spread of h1n1
economics-The oil price increase has caused several products eg:food to have an increase in price
Demographics
ReplyDeleteReality TV show. It is a changing trend in TV industry under the pressure of internet (sharing of information and downloading) and it can attract more numbers of audiences in the current community.
Politics
Cigarettes. Rules and regulation had been set for selling tobacco products to consumers and lately, the packaging of cigarettes pack have been unified to use the glory picture.
Technoloogy
Smart phone or PDA phones. Apparently living in this 21st century, we exposed ourselves to lots of technology updates and we seek for more advanced, hi-tech, convenience yet user friendly portable mobile gadgets which can fulfill our desire. Hence, mobile is no longer a calling and texting machine but with all sorts of business, entertainment and whatever functions. Perhaps, we ask for technology to make us look smart.
Culture
Health products, regardless healthy pills, fitness instrument or even organic food. Globally speaking, the world is promoting us to practice a healthy lifestyle by not only regular physical exercise, but engaged it with daily activities such as sleeping (something like urge you to sleep healthy) and eating. Gradually, it transformed as healthy culture.
Nature
Vaccination (particularly tackle on the cases of H1N1 recently). Frankly speaking, people would not go for it randomly unless they are under critical disease pressure.
Economics
Travel agencies. Seriously, who will spend extra money for travelling during the period of economy crisis? Day-to-day expenses come first.
Demographics
ReplyDeleteComputers and Internet connection. As Afemann states that one in three people globally lack access to electricity and also about 80% of the world's population does not own a telephone line. Furthermore, computers are much harder to obtain in developing countries.
Politics
Most obvious one, drugs. Trafficking, dealing, and consuming illicit drugs are criminal activities that national and international laws are designed to prevent, restrict or stamp out.
Culture
Ramlee burgers. They are no longer selling like hot cakes because of all the new fast food chains such as Burger King, McDonalds and so forth.
Technology
E-media vs print media. The sales of newspapers have definitely decreased ever since the Internet and online-news portal came about.
Nature
Hybrid cars have penetrated the market to curb the many environmental problems.
Economics
The sales of real-estate properties- semi-D, apartments, and etc. decreases currently due to the recession faced worldwide.
Culture
ReplyDeletefast food chains like McD, they only see halal food in Malaysia because Malaysia is an Islamic country
Technology
Military weapons, it depends on the technology to produce better weapons, bombs, missiles etc.
Politics
Imported cars' sales impacted by politics because Malaysia imposed very high tax on imported cars to protect our very own national car, Proton or Perodua.
Nature
Pollution-control solutions such as recycling centres since more people are becoming more environmental friendly.
Economics
the sales of cars perhaps, due to the current economic downturn faced globally. because these assets will only depreciate in value.
Demographics: Books, Novels and newspapers. Print Media has always been the ideal way (before broadcast media was introduced) of sharing knowledge, inspiration, expending the level of creativity as we have all the freedom to imagine deeper and in an intense way. When the authors writes down the layout , he or she already have a target market in their mind or they are just writing to share their experience so that the readers wont make the same mistake as he or she did and take it as a challenge in life. Books and novels can cater to a huge platform of audience ( readers) and the demographics can be reached out to each individual’s preferences on what they want to read and how the book and its contents affects the readers mind, thinking and creativity level and what impact it leaves.
ReplyDeleteCulture: Bollywood VS Hollywood. Day by day, the influence of bollywood and its features can be seen clearly. Channels like Zee Tv, Bf4 (bollywood for you) on Astro and its demand is growing tremendously. Before Hindi movies were not shown in cinema’s but now whenever there is a new hind movie released in India and its starts big names, the movies can be seen played in the cinema’s here. Yasmin Ahmad’s Talentime has a huge influence of bollywood in it, to the clothes and to the dancing. Not forgetting the accessories, especially the demand on the bangles is everywhere for woman.
Technology: The tremendous growth of new media (internet). One can get anything and everything through the usage of internet: reading the news online, gaining all the information (nationally and globally) and to watching movies to gaining all the latest access on knowledge, entertainment, to social networking with friends, to making phones for free. In simple terms, new media is conquering the rest of the media due to its fast speed, easy usability and the fact that it can be accessed through any kind of mobility device. Not forgetting now one can even get their degree online and saving the hassle of going to college when an individual can do all the needful tasks online.
Nature: Body shop products. Say no to animal testing, more and more people are being more aware of how cruel it is to test on animals and they are supporting the campaign “stop killing the animals". Body shop product have become a huge competition for other leading cosmetic and health care brands as body shop products are 100% free animal testing and its supports nature all the way. Body shop proved that you do NOT need to test the product on the animal to see if it works, you can save the poor animal and you don’t have to slaughter the harmless animal, when the products can be animal free testing.
Economics: The oil price in India is killing a lot of people there. Small business people are having a lot of difficulties to support their family. India is already known as one of the largest country for poverty and with the petrol price of RM 5.00 per liter, it has caused the growth of poverty to increase tremendously, the rich gets richer and the poor gets poorer.
I couldn't post the politics factor here as the characters were over the word limit here so that is why I'm posting the factor politics here:
ReplyDeletePolitics: Racism. No doubt a lot of us would say “I’m not a racist”, but honestly, deep down, we all know racism will always be an issue, problem through out the world. The example of Indians in Australia few months ago and how the Indians were treated and how much insult and pain they had to go through.
There was also this incident in America, whereby a black professor who teaches in Harvard and he was having a hard time opening his house door or so due to some key problem or so and there was a white police officer passing and he felt suspicious and he told the professor to follow him to the police station.
The professor was stunt and said “this is my house” and they had a small argument. Being the media who is always hungry for stories, the story was published in the newspapers, due to the skin color and Barrack Obama had a talk with the professor and the police officer and Barrack Obama actually apologize for the county, but the police officer was very egoist and he didn’t say sorry at all. Like Martin Luther King always said, we are one, do not compare us with our skin color, we have a dream together and not as separate colors.
Other example in Malaysia, my friend who is an Indian and he is one the finest writer I know and he works at Malay Mail and he was covering the sensitive issues in Malaysian politics of an Indian political to a Malay political. Few days after his article was published, few guys with mask broke into his house, took his phone, his laptop, his car was smashed and he was threaten that if he writes anything against the Malay politician again, his family will be in danger, isn’t this politics? Why separate each other by our skin color? Why can’t we accept the truth and the bitterness of the Malay politician and accept the fact that we are one and not discriminate us by our skin color. Martin Luther King always say, “ I have a dream” and his dream is to demolish racism forever.
Alif, I like your Television example for the demographics factor. No doubt the market can't cater to just one specific demographic and the television I believe will be the best example to show its significance to demographics factor.
ReplyDelete1)Demographics – An increased of Businesses IT are expected to be the top In-Demand careers, the most growth, the best opportunity and the highest starting salaries in the coming year, this is due to an increase of the ever growing advance technologies and the most usable skills in living.
ReplyDelete2)Politics- Car license. Majority of the population owns a car license due to the easily obtain from bribing the police or person’s in charge/ government official of the licensing. For the written test, most people don't pay the official for the RM200, since if they can remember the answers, they can pass by themselves. Those who need "help" can pay the money, so the person at the test room will give you hint so you can make sure you pass. For the stage two and three, especially for the field and road test, the rule of thumb from the previous people are, you should always pay the money. Since if you don't pay, it is for sure that you don't pass, and you have to pay another RM100 to take the exam again and you may not pass again. Therefore, most people ‘bribe’ the government official to get passed. This is all politics.
3)Culture- The influence of fashion. We-human being, all know that we are never contented into the connotation of common fashion. We intend to explore everything what we have got into newly expressive design and styles of our genre in fashion. As one season slips into the next, we are all searching for new ways to make the most of our outfits. For instance, stripes. Striped fashion comes in a variety of styles and the most popular ones’ are the horizontal stripes and vertical stripes. In the typical perception, horizontal stripes are known better suit for thin people, so they look fatter when they wear horizontal stripes. While for the vertical stripes are better worn by shorter people so that they look tall. But nowadays, because of the trendy development in fashion industry, mass audience perception towards fashion is frequently shifted. For instance, the current most in style fashion is to be checkered trend. A combination of dark and light patches which divided into squares. And just because checkered are define as unique trends that diversified our taste to casual, formal, sporty, simple and even elegant classy for the expensive branded Ralph Lauren and Chanel apparels are also styled with some checkered designs. The mass audience had forgotten the old time when checkered design are mostly seen as table cloth in restaurant and dining area of our houses. Thus, Checkered style is now worth define as changeable and also the most trendy style in the current market.
4)Technology- The ever well-liked internet. Due to the capacity usage of the internet (from news reading, information research, knowledge, entertainment like social networking to phone calling etc…), internet is to be label as the most powerful / influential media. In this modern world, there is no one person who knows about internet who don’t use internet. Not to mention, the youths or adults nowadays are wedged with internet, internet are no longer an accessories (side dishes) but a need in everyone’s living.
5)Nature- Club service- Temperature check. Due to the global concern of H1N1, nowadays every club are to provide a temperature check before you are qualified to go in. Clubbers are to be tested on their body temperatures before they are allow to go in.
6)Economics- Spending habit. Due to the economic down turn, all consumers are more aware on their spending patterns and more willing to save up for the emergency use.
Demographics: Fashion (clothes, shoes). The younger generation want to follow trends and styles portrayed by celebrities, who are very well-known and looked up to. This trend is followed more by the younger generation than it is by the older generation. There are a lot of reality shows that show women/men getting makeovers, following a certain style copied from a celebrity. These trends change a lot from time to time.
ReplyDeletePolitics: National newpapers (in Malaysia). All the newspapers in Malaysia are controlled by the government. (I'll say no more)
Culture: Music. There are different trends of music now, and different types of interests in music. The consumers' culture may affect their preference of music, i.e. Religious people won't really listen to rock, rap, or punk rock; people with conservative/ethnic lifestyles MAY prefer subtle genres of music, rather than the 'louder' ones.
Technology: Floppy disks. No one uses them anymore, due to the invention and on-going innovation of CDs, DVDs and thumb-drives, and because CDs, DVDs and thumb-drives have much much bigger storage capacities than the floppy disk does. Therefore, nobody buys floppy disks nowadays.
Nature: Flu vaccination. With the H1N1 epidemic, there is a significant increase in the demand for flu vaccinations.
Economics: Property. Prices and value of houses, buildings and land goes down when there is economic crisis, as we recently experienced.
what about global warming as a natural phenomenon? what does that impact (if anything)?
ReplyDeleteand spirituality? is this important in marketing?
keep up the good postings.
Demographics – The radio. Before it was used to appeal to the masses. Now it targets a specific type of audience. People listen to Hitz.fm because the have wacky programs and caters to young adults but this does not appeal to the older generation. The older generation will listen to light and easy where the songs are more familiar to them.
ReplyDeletePolitics – Internet access. The government supposes to make Internet surfing unrestricted to a certain level but due to bloggers, the government starts to impose restrictions to certain websites and block access to the blogs.
Culture – Fashion. People are so into foreign designer clothing that local brands are having some business problems. Malaysians are influenced by Japanese and Western fashion that they rarely buy local brands.
Technology – Radio cassettes. Nobody buys radio cassettes anymore due to the existence of cd, dvd and even digital form of music. It is more user-friendly and some are cheaper than radio cassettes because people can obtain just one favorite song rather than the whole album of an artist.
Nature – Plastic bags. Now shops use paper bags rather than plastic bags to help protect the environment.
Big Supermarkets – Big supermarkets like Wal-Mart, Target, and even Giant, cause small supermarkets to lose business, even if they have been around for a long time and make some loyal customers. It is hard for them to support their family. People go to these big supermarkets because they have nearly everything and start to monopolize the industry.
Demographic - Air pollution.
ReplyDeletePopulation of the world is increasing as people nowadays have longer life.
With the increment of population, there are more and more people who take vehicles and cigarrattes which will cause air pollution.
At the same time, deforestation activities will be run often also in order to fulfil the demand of people living which will also cause air pollution.
Politic - Islamic Bank
Islamic bank provides better offer to islam only which other religions not able to enjoy in Islamic country.
For example, Islam can have higher return of investment at Islamic bank which not open to other religions like Chinese, Indian and more.
Culture - Cafe
Nowadays more and more f&b business operators are operating their business in cafe style.
This is because the people today prefer to enjoy in a relaxing environment, friendly service and nice but not too expensive food.
Nature - Green Product
Organizations are more concern about the issue of environment and started to produce green product in order to protect the environment.
Green product is the main concern by many organizations today.
Technology - MP3 player
No more caset and CD but everyone is using MP3 player like IPod, MP3, Modulator to listen music as all of these are more convenient to carry and
have bigger storage for songs. For example, a small size IPod can store more than 10 CDs song.
Economy - Insurance, Investment Product
Insurance and investment industry faced a great impact due to the economy dissesion. People now is more concern on saving up their money rather
do investment and buy insurance.

ReplyDeleteWe evolve in so many ways. For instance when we age, we go through different phases in life as we were once a child, then we become a spouse, then a parent and so on. Our product consumptions alter as we age and I believe DEMOGRAPHICS itself can be based on just one person. Take for instance, cable television. Everyone uses the telly in the household. But it serves very different interests for each demographics. The boys would be enjoying their sports at night, while the girls would hog the remote as they tune into their favourite evening dramas, parents would watch the news at 8...
The government has also implemented a higher rate in taxi fares, which has deterred people from wanting to take the public transport as often. The rise in cab fares is an example of how POLITICS has affected the service. People are more likely to take the train or bus instead due to the price hike. It is a longer route and more time spent, but people are willing to go through it to save money.
It has always been a social norm and CULTURE for us Malaysians to shift towards Western media. We hardly watch Malaysian-made movies or download the songs of Malaysian artists (although our local radio stations provide a taste of their product in the airwaves when possible). The Malaysian music and movie industry has always been stagnant, despite many efforts in publicising the products. It is not really a passion of ours to support local media products due to our upbringing what with foreign media penetrating into our everyday lives.
As the world moves into advanced infrastructures of TECHNOLOGY, consumers now turn to digitalised forms of media. People do not buy CDs nowadays as they prefer to download songs online. A music artist recently chose to place her music from her newest album in a thumbdrive in attempts to make it easier for her fans to derive the songs and transfer them into their iPod, MP3 or computer (which are modes in which people use to listen to music nowadays).
When the influenza A virus got hit in the regions of Melbourne, hand sanitisers (in particularly Dettol) were sold out everywhere as citizens wanted to take precaution of the spread of the virus. The sales of these products (alike face masks) are rising due to the recent development of this NATURE-al epidermic, what with the government pushing for public places to prepare hand sanitisers for everyone's usage.
Due to the economic downturn, people are less likely to spend on... well, absolutely anything! I work in the retail industry and I do see how this affects people. Shopping malls are not as crowded as before, people are not as spendthrift as they think twice over a certain purchase, people opting to bring their own water to save money when they are out for lunch- everything is affected in this ECONOMY, no matter which industry you're speaking from.
Very informative and useful post about Marketing Environment. You discuss the matter macro environment in very precise manners.
