S.W.O.T. analysis of Pixar Animation Studios

    Strength
    1) Pixar uses state of the art technology in developing their animation movies. Also, they know how to utilize the technology that is in their arsenal.
    2) Pixar also employs talented people into their production team. This is to produce movies that is unique but can be appreciated by young and old alike.
    3) Pixar have a good track record with the movies that they create. People always expect unique movies from Pixar. As an example, the up and coming movie, “UP”.

    Weakness
    1) In order to make one movie, Pixar take a great amount of time and effort that can go up to 2-3 years.
    2) Pixar is only focusing on one type of medium and that it film making.

    Opportunity
    1) Pixar always developing and selling animation softwares by utilizing their technological strength.
    2) They also develop games that focus on characters from the movies that they create.

    Threat
    1) The problem with digital products is that they are always vulnerable to digital piracy. This could affect their profit margin.
    2) Pixar usual mode of operation is by concentrating on one movie, and this has one big setback. If the movie fails, then it will be a huge loss for Pixar because they do not have a back-up product to support it.
    3) Pixar at the moment, is monopolizing the animated film market, but other companies might target that market as well because technology can be bought, and talents can be employed.

  12. S.W.O.T Analysis of Apple

Strengths - very successful company. It has a favourable brand perception, and has a very loyal set of customers, which they retain, not only recruit

Weaknesses - The Apple iPod Nano is reported to have a faulty screen: a batch of the company's product has screens that break under impact. Early iPods had faulty batteries. The company is replacing all faulty items.

Opportunities - Apple developed a version of Apple iTunes music store for the phone so users can manage the tracks they store on it. New technologies and strategic alliances also offer opportunities for Apple.

Threats - What is considered a big threat to Apple is the very high level of competition in the technology markets. There is a high product substitution effect in the IT market, so Apple's iPods may soon be tomorrow's technology, as are CDs and Vinyls, if they do not retain their competitive position.

    -Platform of potentiality.

    Weakness

    - Because of the brand's popularity, the "popularity" can disappear rapidly.

  15. The Beatles (or what's left of them)

    Strengths

    - One of the best musical outfits in terms of quality, popularity, pop culture influence, sales of albums and sales of singles.

-Unlike most bands who are remembered because of the cute singer/guitar player, everybody knows every single member of the band.

-The two remaining members, Ringo Starr and especially Sir Paul McCartney, still do projects that raise the sales and awarenesss of the Beatles as a cumulative whole.

-Also generally accepted in the elite few(alongside Queen, Elton John and Rolling Stones; the British musicians are amazing) as the musical outfit with not a single crap song.

    Weakness

-Yoko Ono, who with every Beatles commemorative album and greatest hits album, tries to assert her importance in the band, generally annoying any true-blue Beatles fan.

-In the recently developing football-mad world, There has been a recent trend where fans of ManUnited refuse to listen to the Beatles as they are from Liverpool (even though the Beatles are huge fans of Everton).

    Opportunity

-2010 will be the 30th Anniversary of John Lennon's death and the 40th Anniversary of the Beatles break up. An expected commemorative album/greatest hit's album/concert tour will surely be sold like good food sold to students who suffer eating at KDU Square.

-2013 will be the 50th Anniversary of the beginning of the Beatles. Huge sales of albums/tickets are expected to be sold then as well.

-Paul McCartney's continuing to work (regardless how many people have asked him to retire), and whatever projects that he, and to a lesser extent, Ringo Starr are invlved in will have a lot of publicity and press coverage = good sales. Great marketing focus.

-Cover versions of their songs (good ones) that appear on shows like American Idol or X-Factor would lead to a re-emergence of the popularity of the song (i.e. Bohemian Rhapsody being famous after the Wayne's World movie)

    Threats

-Cover versions of their songs (crap ones. go youtube Jonas Brothers singing one of theirs, can't remember which one) that would lead to ridicule and a subliminal drilling that whenever they hear the original the stupid cover version comes to mind.

-The eventual (personally I hope soon; he's a great musician but he is annoying) death of Paul McCartney and to a lesser extent, Ringo Starr, would lead to a small bump increase before fading away into musical yesteryear memories (see Fred Astaire, Elvis Presley)

-Yoko Ono, if she's alive long after McCartney and Starr, would use their money to rule the world. Okay maybe exaggerating but seeing how she broke up the Beatles, look out for her.

  16. Good posts - but i notice you're not commenting on each other's write-ups?

Alvin - you mentioned something about 'instability of food trend', care to elaborate?

Joanna - I assume you're referring to Air Asia?

Bobstar - I'm not sure the Beatles is suitable right now (though in the past, certainly); how about your analyse Aerosmith? or Linkin' Park? (In fact if i'm not wrong, MJ outbid some Beatle music rights, thus ending his friendship w McCartney)

  17. Kingston Technology
S.W.O.T Analysis on the product – USB Thumb Drive

    Strength
    - Kingston is the world’s independent memory leader, quality assurance and the leadership position in the market
    - light, small and exquisite
    - portable > convenient

    Weak
    - too tiny...easily lost
    - limited storage capacity
    - limited sequential read and write speed

Even though now have the larger storage capacity model USB thumb drive, the sequential read and write speed still unable to compete with the external hard disk

    Opportunity
    - to interchange data with others, people would tend to choose thumb drive (normally hard disk contain more data than thumb drive, some of people even think they couldn’t work without their hard disk)
    - CD-RW or DVD-RW are too less storage and not as good as USB usage; external hard disk is too big in size, heavier and more expensive, thus comparing, people will tend to choose USB thumb drive
    - globalization market

    Treat
    - competitors with more advanced functions and fancy designs
    - the emerge of external USB hard disk
    - technology develop rapidly, easily be replaced or eliminated

feel like the [Opportunity] some of you write is like what you suggest the company to do...a marketing plan??

For example what alvin write in the opportunity for Old Town: Expand to global market and Provide delivery service

Sorry, it makes me a bit confuse what should be in the [Opportunity] part :p

  19. Yeah it should be under the opportunity part because that section is suppose to state or indicate the possibility of the company to gain benefit or expand its business/s.

    DC Comics

    Strengths
    - Well-established in the comic book industry. DC is one of what it is commonly referred to as the Big Two among comic book readers (the other being Marvel)
    - Owns some of the oldest comic book properties, namely Superman and Batman. Both are extremely popular franchises that can rake in billions; the most recent Batman film adaptation, The Dark Knight, alone earned $1 billion worldwide. Imagine how much they have made with not just the comics, but merchandises, off-shoots in other media, license and what not.
    - DC Comics does not just target the medium’s lowest common denominator; superhero fans. The publication has multiple imprints under its name, one of which is Vertigo – an imprint specialising in alternative comics targeted to a more sophisticated audience. Their releases have had multiple praises and literary credence from the wider literature world. Award winning author du jour Neil Gaiman for example had his start with DC Comics, his first critically acclaimed work (and arguably best work) was the Sandman series published by Vertigo. DC Comics also publishes a good amount of works by the medium’s most prolific writer, Alan Moore.
    - Utilises the graphic novel format effectively. Again I can’t cite a source, but it is said that certain series earn more from their TPB collections than single issues. This is especially true with Vertigo releases, so much so that they started producing titles in that format without releasing monthly single issues first. This format also means a longer shelf life at bookstores, which is another point of contention in itself; graphic novels can be sold at bookstores.

    Weaknesses
    - The inability to outgrow the magazine format. A lot of people in the industry argue that the popularity of trade paperbacks and graphic novels are killing titles because not many buy monthly issues anymore. If this is true, perhaps DC Comics should embrace TPBs and graphic novels fully and release all of their titles in that form.
    - Editorial demands. This is only true with superhero titles from DC Comics, writers and artists are under pressure by editors to follow a strict quarter century-worth of continuity. Having to conform to the canon equates to restricted creativity.
    - Vague target audience. With superhero titles, DC Comics practises some censorship and content regulation, yet some titles feature overly adult content. It is almost as if they are unsure who their target audience is.

    Opportunities
    - Hollywood. The movie industry is constantly leeching of other mediums for new ideas. DC Comics is a goldmine for them for almost every genre under the sun.
    - The boob tube. Similarly a lot of TV channels are looking at comic books for inspiration. For example, Vertigo’s most famous title Fables just got picked up by NBC recently.
    - Writers from other mediums. Back then it was comic writers who made the crossover from the funny books to novels (see Neil Gaiman), but recently there are more writers from the latter industry crossing to the comic book world. DC Comics’ latest imprint Vertigo Crime for example has books written by crime fiction authors.
    - E-books. DC Comics can take advantage of current technology and release their materials electronically. Novels have been doing this for quite some time, it’s only a matter of time before comics attempt it.

    Threats
    - The manga boom. The increasing popularity of Japanese comics are threatening to hurt the sales of western comics, DC Comics’ included.
    - Piracy. Believe it or not, comic books can be illegally downloaded from the internet. While this issue has yet to get as bad as what the movie industry is facing, it is still a formidable threat if allowed to grow.
    - Moral policing. Just like books, TV shows and movies, comics constantly face pressures from self-anointed moral police to regulate their content more.

  21. I like the Starbucks SWAT analysis by Audrey, day by day, starbucks is becoming like a trend and style, if you are in starbucks, you are cool and trendy.

But I think it's just way of trying to fit in, that’s why the competition is huge. I honestly prefer coffee-bean and old town kopitiam (Ipoh rocks) Lol, better then starbucks. No doubt starbucks is globalize, but I honestly think that day by day, people are realizing that its just coffee after all and more and more people prefer old town white coffee, its cheaper and I honestly think it taste better then starbucks.

Plus the market value for old town white-coffee is growing tremendously.

I have chosen to scrutinise giant telco, Maxis for my example on a SWOT analysis.

    Strength:
Maxis is known to have the best services in terms of good connection and reception. It targets the cosmopolitan citizens who are majority in the work force. They also have broadband services as they move towards new media technologies. Its brand image is distinguished to the eyes of the public as they use very strong colour associations (green). They also have a good brand loyalty with their customers as they have good customer services. The company's website also allows for customers to do their billings and such online.

    Weakness:
The ever-continuous flow of competition as they have competitors like DiGi and Celcom engaging with the public as well. Maxis is also the most expensive of all the three main telcos (in terms of rates).

    Opportunity:
The company's owner, Ananda Krishnan is the owner of digital television, Measet Broadcast Astro and so this is something the company is able to make use of. As both are strong companies in the local business industry, they would move towards the same direction in terms of the advancement of technology, with the strong and steady income garnered. The prepaid services under Maxis, Hotlink also provides to the younger generation which allows for the brand to reach most targeted consumers in the market.

    Threats:
Competition is always a threat to the company. The loyalty of consumers to other telcos are also seen as a challenge to overcome.
